The Formula of Time and Speed and Distance

The formula of Time Calculation –

Time = Distance/Speed

This formula is used to find the time. As the speed increases, the time itself decreases.

The formula of Distance Calculation –

Distance = Speed × Time

Using this formula, it can be found that how much distance an object can cover at a given speed and time. Distance is obtained by the product of time and speed.

The formula of Speed Calculation –

Speed = Distance / Time

With the help of this formula, it can be found that how slow or fast an object moves. It describes the distance, divided by the time taken to cover the distance, to determine what the speed was.

Relationship between Time, Speed and Distance

speed = x / t

X = Distance

T = time

It tells how slow or fast an object moves.

Distance = Speed x Time, and Time =  x/v

This means as time decreases as speed increases

Unit of Time, Distance, and Speed

Speed, distance, and time can each be expressed in different units. If you do not know the law of change well, then it is difficult to find your answers related to it. Therefore, remember.

  • Unit of Time: Seconds, Minute, Hour
  • Unit of Speed: Meter Per Second (m/s), Kilometer Per Hour ( k/h)

Memorable facts about speed, distance, and time

Conversion of units:

To convert from km/h to m/s, multiply by 5/18

Therefore, 1 km/h = 5/18 m/s

To convert from m/sec to km/h, multiply by 18/5

Therefore, 1 m/sec = 18/5 km/h = 3.6 km/h

1 yard = 3 feet

1 km/h = 5/8 mile/h

1 kilometer = 1000 meters = 0.6214 miles

1 mile = 1.609 kilometer

1 hour = 60 minutes = 60 * 60 seconds = 3600 seconds

1 mile = 1760 yards

1 yard = 3 feet

1 mile = 5280 feet

That is, in simple words,

1 kmph = 5 / 18 m / s

1 meter per second = 18 / 5 km / h

Important facts related to time and distance:

1. If two objects are moving in the same direction with speed v1 and v2 respectively, then the relative speed of the objects will be v1v2.

2. If two objects are moving in opposite directions with speeds v1 and v2 respectively, then the relative speed of the objects will be v1 + v2.

3. If the speed of an object is given in kilometer/hour, then to convert it to meter/second, multiply the speed by 5/18.

4. If the speed of an object is given in meters/second, then to convert it into kilometers/hour, multiply the speed by 18/5.

Average Speed

The ratio of the total distance covered by a body to the total time taken to cover that distance is called the average speed of that body.

The formula of Average speed =

Total distance covered  =      (di+d2+d3+ …….dn)

Total time is taken (t1+12+………… tn)

If a person travels a distance of X to Y km at a speed of A m/s and from Y to a distance of X km at a speed of B m/s, then the average distance traveled during the whole journey

=          {2AB / (A+B)} meter/second

Relative Speed

When two moving bodies are moving in opposite directions, their relative speed is the sum of the speeds of those two bodies. Conversely, if both the bodies are moving in the same direction, then their relative speed is the difference of the speeds of those two bodies.

For example, when two objects are moving in opposite directions at the speed of x km/h and y km/h respectively, their relative speed will be (x + y). In the second case, when the same two objects are moving in the same direction, their relative speed will be (x – y).

Step 1 – Open our speed calculator page, now the partition is exactly what you’re looking for. The first column is “Enter distance value & select unit”, here you have to enter the distance value (the total distance covered in any particular movement).

Step 2 – After entering the distance value, select the measuring unit for the distance value. In simple words select the unit as per your distance value. There are several options to select such as meter, kilometer, yard, inches, feet, etc. For example, if you are calculating the time for any movement in which total distance is 150 kilometers so type “150” in distance value and select the “kilometer” option from the unit column.

Step 3 – After filling in proper information about distance in the first column, now into the second column which is “Enter speed value & select unit”, enter the speed value in the first typing space (total speed in movement).

Step 4 – Now select the speed measuring unit for the speed value you have entered. There is all the speed measuring such as meter per second, kilometer per hour, feet per second, feet per minute, etc. For example, if the movement happened with 60km per hour speed, that in speed column type 60 and from unit column select the kilometer per hour option.

Step 5 – Now there are two options you have, first “calculate” and second “clear”, so if you want to reset all the values you’ve entered above you can click on the clear option. And if you want to go further and calculate time from given data so click on the “calculate” option.

Step 6 – Once you clicked the “calculate” option, you will get the correct consumed time in the “Time” column, mentioned below. The first box indicates the hour, the second indicates the minutes and the third box will tell you the exact second, based on the data you’ve given.

Calculate Distance from Speed and Time

Just like Time, calculating Distance is also easy. Where while calculating time, you need distance and speed value, you need Speed and Time value for calculating Distance. If you got both then all you need to do is to follow the below-mentioned points so you can calculate the Distance …

Step 1 – Go to the speed calculator page, now go to the second partition which is named “Distance from Speed and Time“ The first column in the second partition is “Enter speed value & select unit”, here you have to enter the total speed value (total speed in happening any particular movement).

Step 2 – After putting the speed value in the first box, select the measuring unit for the speed value, just like we did before for the above process. Here you will get several options to select such as meter per second, kilometer per hour, knot, yard per minute, etc. So for example, if you are calculating the time for any movement in which total speed is 80 kilometers per hour so type “80” in front of the speed value box and select the “kilometer per hour” option from the unit column.

Step 3 – Once you’ve completed filling details in the first column, now into the second column which is “Enter Time”, enter the time in the first typing space (total time consumed in happening any particular movement). Time should be entered as, HH:MM: SS, meaning in the first box type total hour (place zero if not applicable), in the second box type total consumed minutes (place zero if not applicable), and in the third box type exact seconds (place zero if not applicable).

Step 4 – Once you’ve entered all the required information in respective places, there are two options you have first “calculate” and second “clear”, so if you want to reset or clear all the values you’ve typed above to get your answer, you can select the clear option. And if you don’t want to do that and calculate time from given values, so select the “calculate” option.

Step 5 – Once you have selected the “calculate” option, you will get the correct covered distance in the “Total Distance Covered” column. You can select the measuring unit in which you want your answer. You will get several units there, such as meters, yard, kilometer, feet, etc.  

Calculate Speed from Distance and Time

To calculating speed you need distance and time value. Once you get both distance and time detail, you can easily calculate speed with the help of our speed calculator, all you need to do is to follow the below-mentioned points so you can calculate the speed …

Step 1 – Go to our speed calculator page, check the third partition named “Speed from Distance and Time “. The first column you’ll find in the third partition is “Enter distance value & select unit”, here you need to enter the total distance value (total distance covered during happening any particular movement).

Step 2 – After filling the distance value in the first box, select the measuring unit for the distance value, as same as we did before on the above two methods. Here you have to select the correct distance measure unit as per your distance value. You will find all the possible distance measuring unit here such as meter per second, kilometer per hour, knot, yard per minute, etc. For example, if you are calculating the speed for any particular movement in which the total distance covered was 100 kilometers so you have to type “100” in front of the distance value box and select the “kilometer” option from the unit column.

Step 3 – After completing filling details in the first column, now go to the second column which is “Enter Time”, enter the time in the first typing space (total time consumed in happening any particular movement). Remember Time should be entered as, HH: MM: SS format, meaning in the first box type total consumed hour (fill zero if not applicable), in second box type total, consumed minutes (fill zero if not applicable), and in third box type exact consumed seconds (fill zero if not applicable).

Step 4 – Once you’ve filled all the required information in respective fields, there are two options waiting for you, first one is “calculate” and the second one is “clear”, so if you want to reset or wipe all the values or data you’ve filled above to get your answer, you can select the clear option. And if you don’t want to do that and want to calculate time from the above-mentioned values, so select the “calculate” option.

Step 5 – As far as you clicked on the “calculate” option, you will get the correct total speed in the “Total Speed” column. Now you can select the measuring unit in which you want your answer. You will get several units there, such as meter per second, yard per second, kilometer per hour, feet per minute, etc.
