Sales tax calculator

Enter the dollar amount and the tax percent from the store, the receipt, or your state. The calculator does not guess a state rate. Choose whether the amount you entered is before tax or already includes tax.

Takeout priced $12.99 before tax, or $14.03 on the receipt, at 8%.

Which amount did you enter?

When to use this calculator

Use this page when you know the rate you were charged or the rate you expect to pay. Enter 8 if the receipt shows 8 percent. Do not expect a built-in California or New York rate. Those rates vary by city and change over time.

The pre-tax field is the amount before sales tax. The with-tax field is the amount after sales tax. Going from $100 and 8 percent produces $108.00. Going back from $108.00 and 8 percent returns $100.00, within a cent after half-up rounding.

This is not a tip calculator. A restaurant tip belongs on the tip calculator. Longer notes are in How sales tax is added in this tool.

Try these numbers

  1. What is $100 after 8 percent sales tax? The amount with tax is $108.00.
  2. What pre-tax amount sits under $108.00 at 8 percent? The pre-tax amount is $100.00.
  3. A zero tax percent leaves the amount unchanged.

Questions

Why do I have to type the rate?

State and city rates differ, and a table would go stale. The honest input is the percent you already know.

Which field is before tax?

When the first option is selected, the amount you enter is before tax. When the second option is selected, the amount you enter already includes tax.

Will the reverse trip always return the same cents?

Half-up rounding to the cent can leave a one-cent difference on some rates. The $100 and 8 percent pair returns $100.00.
