When to use this calculator
Use this page for a restaurant check, a delivery total, or any single bill where you want a percent tip. Enter the amount in US dollars. If the printed bill already includes sales tax, leave the first tax option selected, so the tip is computed on that full amount.
If you want to tip on the pre-tax amount, choose the second option and enter the tax percent from the receipt. The calculator then computes tip on the pre-tax bill and adds tax after the tip. Tax is not applied to the tip.
When more than one person pays, leftover cents go to the first person, so the shares add up to the total. If you need line items instead of one sum, use the bill split calculator.

Questions
Do the split shares always add up to the total?
Yes. The total is converted to cents, divided by the number of people, and leftover cents are given to the first people. That keeps the parts equal to the total.
Is the tip computed before or after tax?
That depends on the option you select. The default treats the bill as already including tax. The other option tips on the pre-tax bill and adds tax afterward.
Can I enter zero percent?
Yes. A zero tip percent produces a tip of $0.00. A negative bill or a people count below 1 is rejected next to the field.
