Try these numbers
- What is an 18 percent tip on an $84.50 bill? The tip is $15.21 and the total is $99.71.
- If two people split that total, do the shares add back to $99.71? The first person pays $49.86 and the second pays $49.85.
- Need a percent instead? Open the percentage calculator and ask what 15 percent of 80 is. The result is 12.
Read the guides for percent change, markup versus margin, sales tax, and compound versus simple interest. About this site explains that numbers stay in the browser.
Questions
Is markup the same as margin?
No. Markup is (selling price − cost) ÷ cost. Margin is (selling price − cost) ÷ selling price. A 25 percent markup on an $80 cost is a $100 selling price and a 20 percent margin.
Why is there no sales tax table for the 50 states?
Local rates change, and many cities add their own tax. You enter the percent from the receipt or from your state. The calculator applies that rate. It does not guess California, New York, or any other state.
How are money amounts rounded?
Dollar results are rounded to the nearest cent using half-up rounding. Five-tenths of a cent on a positive amount rounds up. When a total is split, leftover cents go to the first person, so the shares still add up to the total.
Is the compound interest result a bank quote?
No. The compound interest calculator uses P × (1 + r ÷ n)^(n × t). That is an educational figure, not investment advice and not an APY from a bank.
Do the numbers leave my browser?
No. Each calculator runs in your browser after the page loads. There is no account and no tracker on these pages.
What does this site not calculate?
It does not calculate auto loans, take-home pay, employer payroll cost, or website value. It does not do school algebra write-ups, and it is not a dating site.
When should I use the tip calculator instead of the bill split calculator?
Use the tip calculator when you have one bill amount. Use the bill split calculator when you want to add line items, then tip, then divide.
