When to use this calculator
Use this page when a group is splitting a check. One sum is enough for a single printed total. Line items help when you want to add appetizers and drinks first, then tip on that subtotal.
Do not fill both a one-check total and line items at the same time. The calculator asks you to pick one source for the subtotal, so the formula stays clear.
People must be at least 1. A zero or negative people count is rejected next to the field. For a single bill without line items, the tip calculator is the shorter path.
Try these numbers
- Split $84.50 with an 18 percent tip between two people. The total is $99.71. The shares are $49.86 and $49.85.
- Those two shares add up to $99.71. The extra cent goes to the first person.
- A tip of 0 percent splits the subtotal only.
Questions
Who pays the leftover cent?
The first person, then the next, until leftover cents are gone. That is how the shares still equal the total.
Can I enter more than two items?
Yes. Use Add item for each line. Clear the one-check field when the items should be the subtotal.
Is this a payroll split?
No. This page only splits a check or a list of dollar amounts. It does not compute take-home pay.
