When to use this calculator
Use this page at a shelf when two sizes have different prices. Enter the sticker price and the quantity printed on the package. Keep the unit the same on both sides, such as ounces or count.
Quantity must be greater than zero because unit price divides by quantity. A zero quantity is rejected next to the field. Negative prices are rejected as well.
The cheaper package is the one with the lower dollars per unit after half-up rounding to the cent. If the unit labels differ, the calculator still shows both unit prices and warns that the units may not be comparable.
Try these numbers
- Is 16 oz for $4.99 cheaper per ounce than 28 oz for $7.49? Package A is $0.31 / oz. Package B is $0.27 / oz. Package B is cheaper per ounce.
- Equal unit prices produce a tie, and neither package is outlined.
- A quantity of 0 cannot be used, because the calculator would have to divide by zero.

What unit should I type?
Type the unit printed on both packages, such as oz, lb, or ct. The calculator does not convert ounces to pounds.
How is the cheaper package chosen?
Each unit price is price ÷ quantity, rounded to the nearest cent. The lower number is cheaper.
